Youth & Adult Program (YAP)
The goal of YAP is to provide a place for adults 19 years and older to socialize while enjoying
a variety of activities. This group helps develop social skills, build friendships, and support participation in community activities.
We currently run YAP Social Club, Tabletop Club, and Outdoor Club. We change based on our members’ interests.
YAP Social club is held on WEDNESDAY evenings from around 6-7:30pm depending on the activity and location. Every Wednesday incorporates different activities. We also has other clubs you can be a part of if there is one activity you want to do more of. All YAP Club schedules are now on our Events Calendar – see to the right on this page or on our news and events page https://autismokanagan.ca/news-events/.
YAP Clubs are currently for ages 19 and over.
Here are our other AOK clubs for 2022! Email firstname.lastname@example.org to join.
If you are 19 years or older and would like to join one or all of our YAP Clubs, you can contact our leaders, Megan or Mitch, at email@example.com. One of them will contact you and set up a virtual meeting to answer any questions and see if YAP is a good fit for you – if so, our leaders will help you become a member.
Since Covid restrictions, we have been gathering virtually. We look forward to a time when we can meet again in person!
YAP Social Club allows participants hang out with like-minded peers. This program provides a mix of activities including games nights, active recreation, community activities, social skills development, information sessions, guest speakers, and more. Activities are chosen based on the interests of the group.
Participants also have opportunities to volunteer at AOK events and are encouraged to offer suggestions to the AOK Board of Directors about the needs of adults with autism in our community.
COVID-19 UPDATE TO MEMBERS: We provide a variety of in-person, online, and virtual activities that follow the AOK COVID-19 Safety Plan. To ensure attendees, volunteers/staff, and families stay healthy and safe, Autism Okanagan (AOK) will follow public health recommendations specific to limiting the spread of COVID-19. Vaccines will be mandatory for in person indoor activities in 2022. Please don’t hesitate to contact our leaders who are available to support you during this time.
Please note that participants must either be independent for self-care and safety or attend with a support person. They should be able to participate in activities with the intermittent help of their peers and our young leaders. Our leaders are not able to address individual needs on a continuous basis. Parents and support workers are welcome to attend for support if needed, with the hopes that as the year progresses the participant becomes more independent and comfortable attending on their own. Ideally, we are hoping to give adults with autism a place to hang out without hovering parents or caregivers.
