As the cold weather approaches, we start to pull out all the gear needed to keep our kids warm. For children on the spectrum, changes to seasonal clothing can be difficult especially if your little ones are used to shorts and sandals. To make this transition a successful one, below are some tips that have worked for some parents.
Visuals
The use of visuals can be very helpful. Whether it be a picture of the winter clothes or a Social story, these tools can help prepare your child for the change from a light fall coat to heavier winter boots and jackets. There are some great Apps on the iPad designed to help kids get dressed (visit the APP store, iDO Getting Dressed is one example.
Give yourself time
Make sure you give yourself and your child some extra time to get ready before heading. Getting out the door can take much longer at this time of year so it is best to have all your clothing ready so that the time to get dressed is shorter and thus no uncomfortably hot for you child. This can avoid frustration for both parent and child if you are organized.
Choices
Choosing the right clothing is also important. You don’t want anything that is too binding. Watch for waistbands that adjust, perhaps avoid turtlenecks and find a jacket that has an easy pull zip. It may be helpful to involve your child in the selection process so they feel a part of the decision and recognize the jacket when you pull it out.
A couple of good tips…
-Get a pull that also works as a fidget toy or chew. This will help them zip up themselves and also provide some sensory input.
-Buy multiples. Gloves and mitts go missing and some kids want the same (and matching) gloves and mitts.
-Give your little one some deep pressure before sliding on that boot, gloves or hats.
-Get into a routine so that every day your gearing up goes smoothly
